Wedding & ritual

Gameiare, zalo

გამეჲარე, ზალო

A brief bridal welcome that names the relationships in a new household.

Lyrics & translation

About this song

Shioshvili prints this five-line welcome in her discussion of songs sung when a bride arrives at the groom’s home. It names the father-in-law, mother-in-law, brother-in-law and sister-in-law as the bride’s new family. The neighbouring commentary is attributed to Ilyas Altun of Kokbereti, a locality of Chikhiskhevi.

The passage sits beside several Gelino-related wedding texts. The book also compares examples from Machakhela and other parts of Adjara. Those comparisons help explain the ritual setting, but they should not all be merged into one supposedly complete local lyric. This entry uses the first line as its title to identify the exact short text.

The words document a historical welcome and its family vocabulary. They are presented with source context, rather than as instructions for present-day brides. No modern song recording called Gelino is attached as though it necessarily performed these same five lines.

Lyrics & translation

Complete five-line text as printed in Shioshvili (2016), p. 102, citing Shavsheti (2011), p. 491. Dialect spellings are retained. Zalo is a form of address for a sister-in-law/new bride in this context. English and Turkish are editorial meaning translations, not a transcription or translation of a linked modern recording.

Come through, sister-in-law, come through!
Your father-in-law is a father,
Your mother-in-law is a mother,
Your brother-in-law is a brother,
Your sister-in-law is a sister!
