Bazgirulai

ბაზგირულაჲ

A dance-song text that names the valley’s villages and turns distance from Badzgireti into longing.

Lyrics & translation

About this song

Bazgirulai belongs to the dance repertoire documented in Badzgireti. Shioshvili prints a twelve-line text, citing R. Khalvashi’s 2007 publication. It joins several short verses: first the nearby place names and longing for Badzgireti, then an invitation to take a hand and walk together, and finally a remembered journey through Janjiri.

The author describes the sung text as a combination of several verse-songs circulating in the region. It is therefore useful to read the stanzas as a documented arrangement, rather than assume one fixed text was sung everywhere. Shioshvili also records a shorter variant from Zuleikha Demir in Ustamisi in 2005.

The 2025 music catalogue lists a related incipit, Daba da Devrieti, recorded by Giorgi Kraveishvili in Ustamisi in 2014, performed by Mikael Altun and Kamil Demir (Bikirashvili), audio item 140. That catalogue reference does not establish that its recording contains every line reproduced here.

Lyrics & translation

Complete twelve-line text printed in Shioshvili (2016), p. 90, via Khalvashi (2007), p. 311. The three stanza breaks are editorial reading divisions. Dialect spellings and the source form Devieti are retained. Batsrebi and Ziaret are left as local geographical terms rather than given an unverified literal meaning. English and Turkish are editorial reading translations; they are not transcriptions of the catalogue recording.

Georgian originalEnglish translation
1

დაბა და დევიეთი,
ზემოდან ზაქიეთი.
ორი დღეა, აღარ ვარ,
მომსურდა ბაზგირეთი!

1

Daba and Devieti,
Zakieti above them.
I have been away for two days,
And I long for Badzgireti!

2

– სიდევრი? – ბაზგირელი,
– მოდი, ჩამართვი ხელი!
სიცოცხლეში ვიაროთ
ჯანჯირი-ბაზგირეთი!

2

“Where are you from?” “Badzgireti.”
“Come, give me your hand!”
Let us wander in our lifetime
Between Janjiri and Badzgireti!

3

ჯანჯირის ბაწრებიდან
გეჲარ, გახვალ ზიარეთ.
სულ არ დამავიწყდება,
ჩვენ რო ერთათ ვიარეთ.

3

By Janjiri’s Batsrebi,
You pass on toward Ziaret.
I shall never forget
How we walked together.
