Love & longing
ეჰლოჯან
A familiar refrain, a documented Ziosi performance, and several local memories of how the song began.
Ehlocan belongs in this archive through documented performance, not just through its modern popularity. Kraveishvili’s catalogue identifies a 2014 Ziosi recording by Sabri Bilgin, Burak Bilgin and Cemal Yılmazlar: audio item 70 in the 2018 dissertation, and item 141 in the 2025 book. The later catalogue also lists an instrumental Ehlocan medley played on chiboni by Mürsel Demir in Ziosi in 2022 (item 152).
Its origin is remembered differently. A 2014 account places an early Turkish text in Diyobani. Material collected in 2022 instead connects the song with an Iveti woman called Ehlo and a man called Kamil associated with Tskalsimeri. These are attributed oral-history accounts; they do not establish one proven author, birthplace or original language. Kraveishvili also questions an informant’s proposed Kurdish explanation of the rhythm.
The linked Samida video is a modern performance on the ensemble’s official channel. It is presented alongside the research history, not labelled as the 2014 Ziosi field recording. Your own preferred performances can be added here as additional versions.
